When to celebrate?
It’s the birthday of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. This memorable day was known as Federal Territory Day, which celebrated on the 1st February of every year. This celebration took place on the three different states, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. This special day marks the anniversary of the formation of Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, which took place in 1st February, 1974. Labuan became the second federal territory on 17th May, 1984. While Putrajaya was the third to become federal territory on 1st February, 2001.
Originally, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya came under the state of Selangor, and Labuan was under the state of Sabah. The main purpose of the change was due to the events surrounding the 1969 elections and the riots that followed. By changing able to reduce the clashes between the federal and Selangor state governments. While Labuan joined to become federal territory due to Sabah ceded Labuan to the federal government which later been accessed to a federal territory.
Each of the state works on different things, such as Kuala Lumpur was the capital of Malaysia, while Labuan was the offshore International Financial Centre, and Putrajaya was the administrative capital.
Each year since year 2007, a different main theme has been celebrated generally to do with citizens, unity, progress and prosperity. While year 2008 onwards, different awards, decorations and medals have been given to selected citizens for their contributions within the federal territories.
